Course Description

Violence prevention education and resources have become a priority for all BC healthcare organizations due to the increasing prevalence of violent incidents in healthcare. A provincial commitment has been made to protect workers from workplace violence. 

This training is part of the violence prevention program.

This is an in-person, hands on learning that expands on the skills first learned in the 8, PVPC e-learning modules which nursing students need to take to meet the requirements at the site of their practice experience/practicum, based on the provincial OH&S requirements.

  • Recognizing Risks and Behaviours
  • Assessing and Planning
    • In-depth review of the Point of Care Risk Assessment
    • Behavioural Planning
  • Responding to the Risk
    • Reviewing and putting into action de-escalation skills,
    • Determining when and how to call for help
    • Applying personal safety techniques
  • Reporting and Communicating, post incident
    • Review of a nursing student’s rights and responsibilities of reporting and documenting.

Students who register are understood to be confirming that they meet this requirement.

Their college and instructors may request proof of this pre-requisite completion.

Description

This in-person refresher course takes about one hour to complete. 

The refresher allows students and staff to review and practice their violence prevention skills. 

WorkSafe BC requires an annual refresher for employees or students practicing at high-risk programs. 

The mandatory yearly refresher mitigates skill decay.

Course Length

50 minutes

Course Prerequisites

Completion of the PVPC Classroom Course within the last calendar year

Target Audience

Post-secondary students entering high-risk departments & clinical sites under BC health authorities.

Grading

This is a mastery/non-mastery course.

This class requires participation, students are required to be active participants.

 

Upon course completion, students will receive a certificate via their LearningHub account pending verification of their LearningHub profile email address with the facilitator.

Other Information

  • This workshop runs from 0800-1600 with two 15-minute breaks and one 30-minute lunch break.
  • You’ll need to attend the entire day to complete the session.
  • Students who arrive more than 15 minutes late will not be admitted and must re-register. It is the student’s responsibility to be on time for their session.
  • People who have not registered for the course will be turned away. Drop-ins are not permitted.

Please note: For PVPC Refreshers, the training is approximately 50 minutes with no breaks.

The same expectations apply with the refresher, except that students arriving more than 5 minutes late will be turned away.


This Violence Prevention class is the Provincially standardized program.


The Provincial Violence Prevention Curriculum (PVPC) aims to help healthcare workers learn the steps they need to take to prevent and protect against violence in the workplace.


This eight-hour classroom session builds on the skills learned in the PVPC e-learning modules (prerequisites to this course).

  • Assessing and Planning (point-of-care risk assessments and behavioural care planning)
  • Responding to the Risk (de-escalation skills, determining when and how to call for help, applying personal safety techniques)
